Chora, the capital of Kythira, is one of the oldest settlements of the island, with a rich historical, archeological and geological background. The old city was confined within Forteza, inside the Venetian Castle and in “Mesa Vourgo”, a protected neighborhood right under the Castle.

Gradually with the increase of the population, Chora expanded the “Mesa Vourgo” neighborhood to the area around the Castle and got it's distinctive characteristics. The ethereal Castle facing the South, the vast amount of old small churches, the stairways and old walk ways.

Today, travellers can enjoy a walk within the walls of the Castle with a marvelous view of South Aegean, visit the museum, walk around “Mesa Vourgo” and Belvedere, enjoy a coffee or shopping, and visit periodical exhibitions and cultural events in the summer.
